Add support for 10 cheap, mainstream motherboards

Reported by: uwe Owned by: somebody
Priority: major Milestone: Going mainstream
Component: coreboot Version: v2
Keywords: Cc:
Dependencies: Patch Status: there is no patch

Description (last modified by uwe) (diff)

It would be nice to have LinuxBIOS support a bunch of easily available, mainstream (Desktop) motherboards in the price range of 30-80 Euros/Dollars. Some popular vendors seem to be ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock.

This should greatly increase the number of user who will try out LinuxBIOS, and even more important it will quite likely increase the number of contributors and developers who get involved...

Please also send lspci output to the mailing list or attach it to trac...

I have an Asus A7V8X-X. I'd like to contribute to supporting it. How much does it cost to get started?

I'm waiting for it!

The abit kn9 ultra has the Winbond W83627EHG super i/o chip (listed with a ? on the Desktop wiki page). I have one of those, any way I could contribute? Is the nforce 570 ultra mcp very different from the mcp55, listed as work-in-progress? If not, supporting my board should'nt be to difficult?

I read that the board has an "MCP55-Ultra" chipset. I honestly don't know whether it's the same as the MCP55 support we have now...

The Winbond W83627EHG should work, i.e. you should be able to get serial debugging output if you were inclined to help with debugging/developing.

What northbridge is on the board? Is it an NVIDIA one or an AMD K8 (probably has another "marketing" name, I don't know)...

If you have an AMD K8 northbridge and the MCP55 is the one we support it should be doable to add support for your board if you're willing to help by trying some patches we create...

This issue can be closed, we easily support more than 10 desktop-style motherboards in v2 now.

This does not mean we'll stop adding more boards, of course.
